Description: |
* These are not original recordings by the women, but recordings done by Amnesty International* Amnesty International's report She is not a criminal: The Impact of Ireland’s abortion law documents shocking cases of Irish authorities denying women and girls necessary healthcare in order to prioritize the life of the foetus and women having to travel abroad to get an abortion. The shocking, preventable and highly publicized death of Savita Halappanavar. Savita Halappanavar’s death had a particularly strong impact on many of the women interviewed for this report. Roisin spoke to Amnesty International about her first-hand experiences with miscarriage and abortion in Ireland,. Roisin’s experience of a miscarriage occurred seven years before the death of Savita Halappanavar—but it was only because of the media attention around Savita Halappanavar’s death that she realized quite how dangerous her situation had been. In 2003, Roisin was six weeks pregnant with her third child when she began to experience complications and bleeding. However, she was told she needed to wait nearly a month longer, until she was 11 or 12 weeks pregnant, so that they could absolutely confirm there was no heartbeat. |
