---|---|
Description: |
In June 2015, Amnesty International sent a delegation to support the organisers and participants in the annual Europride event which this year took place in Riga, Latvia. Over 5,000 people attended including many from the LGBT community in Latvia, across Europe and from all over the world. This was the first time the event was hosted in a former Soviet Union country. The thousands of pride marchers this year were only met with several dozen counter-protesters. This is a stark contrast to the first pride march that was held in Riga 10 years ago with 70 pride marchers and some 3,000 counter-protesters. Latvia is strategically placed between Russia and Western Europe. While Russia has recently introduced several pieces of anti-LGBT legislation, prompting international condemnation, organisers hoped that hosting EuroPride would be a hallmark for inclusion in Latvia, helping shift public attitudes toward equality. Contributors in the film include Colm O'Gorman, Director of Amnesty International Ireland |
