|Title:||FreeRightsDefenders in Turkey protest outside EU headquarters|
Scores of activists came together for a protest outside the European Commission building in Brussels this morning to call on High Representative for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini to urgently raise the issue of jailed human rights defenders - including Amnesty International’s Turkey Director and Chair, Idil Eser and Taner Kılıç - at her meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister later today.
Those present included Amnesty International Secretary General, Salil Shetty and the partners of two of the jailed activists - Laressa Dickey (partner of of Ali Gharavi) and Magdalena Freudenschuss (partner of Peter Steudtner).
There were giant effigies of the 10 jailed human rights defenders.
The six human rights defenders remanded in custody and joining Amnesty’s Taner Kılıç behind bars are İdil Eser (Amnesty International), Günal Kurşun and Veli Acu (Human Rights Agenda Association), Özlem Dalkıran (Citizens’ Assembly), Ali Gharavi (IT strategy consultant) and Peter Steudtner (non-violence and wellbeing trainer). The four human rights defenders who had been released on bail, but are now facing detention again are Nalan Erkem (Citizens Assembly), İlknur Üstün (Women's Coalition), Nejat Taştan (Equal Rights Watch Association) and Şeyhmus Özbekli (Rights Initiative)
